After investing time to design, construct, finish and finally assemble a cabinet for my tools, imagine the surprise to find out that the carefully designed and crafted dovetail drawers I had built to hold my Systainers were 1” too narrow—the container which was supposed to fit inside the drawer, rested on the top of the ½” sides. Not only were the drawers too narrow, but the actual cabinet opening was 1” too narrow. It was either pitch the project or figure out a way to salvage it.
The original idea had been to house five Systainers on each of the two sides, but by redesigning the drawers to accommodate the container by holding it on its edges (Photos 3 & 4), four Systainers could be housed on each side. The drawers were reduced on the sides, ¼” plywood was added to the outside of each drawer side to eliminate lateral movement (Photo 5), and an insert was built to better support the bottom of each Systainer (Photo 6).
The solution may have been a “Hail Mary” play, but it got the project over the goal line. In fact, if you didn’t know it was a mistake, you could almost believe the cabinet had been designed as finally built.
Thanks for looking.
P.S. The drawers at the bottom were to hold vacuum bags, extra hoses and miscellaneous accessories. However, they currently contain various router jigs for other projects.
